Newspaper and magazine editors are selecting the photos to publish that depict black people as victims and succumbing to white violence as opposed to them fighting for their rights because they want everyone to see what is actually happening to black people and how terrible they are treated because of their race. Although I agree with Berger and how the media tends to show more of black people as victims, I think death would give more attention to everyone more than to show black people protesting unfortunately. It is important to show everyone how much white people are treating black people, it is also very powerful to see photographs of black people uniting together to stand up for themselves and their rights.

    Hi Katrina,
I agree when you said death would give more attention to everyone more than to show black people protesting, unfortunately. I used to work in the news station when I was in my country. One of the most important goals is rating. Some publicities use their privilege to publish whichever they think that should be seen by people/ society. Some might think that society’s interest is their number one priority. However, Scandal and death people (as a victim) news is always popular. Clearly, this kind of news would give more attention to the audience.

This is a really interesting discussion. Both of you do a good job of pointing out the contours of this conversation. On the one hand, it would be uplifting and empowering to portray black people fighting for their rights; on the other, it might garner more ratings to portray them as victims of violence.
